About the DGAFMS

The Directorate General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) is the controlling authority of AFMS.The Director General Armed Forces Medical Services is the head of the Armed Forces Medical Services and is responsible to the Government for the overall medical policy in so far as they relate to the Armed Forces.

The Director Generals of Medical Services of Army, Navy and Air Force are the medical advisors to their respective Chief of Staff. Its primary functions are planning, standardization, provisioning &procurement and storage of expandable (drugs and consumables) and non-expandable (equipment) stores required for medical treatment. The requirement of medical stores is met through central procurement by DGAFMS.

To meet shortfalls in supply of expandable stores, local purchases are done by medical depots for dependent units and hospitals. However, the procurement and maintenance of medical equipment for all hospitals and continues up gradation of hospitals in terms of medical equipment is done centrally by DGAFMS.
